"Rustic to fit in with traditional Bay Area style, organic, and with respect for the city’s semi-rural setting. Clad in stone, with a canopy at the top. Challenging elevation changes, but with challenge comes 'opportunity'."
-- Barbara Flammang, principal architect of
Flammang and Killefer, award-winning designers of
the Lafayette Library and Learning Center
From its exterior of recycled teak and natural stone, to its high-tech solar panels, vaulted trussed ceiling and abundant natural light, the Lafayette Library and Learning Center is testimony to the beauty of being "green." Sunlight refracts from prisms in the innovative solar fireplace across roomy tables and comfortable chairs. Scaled to be kid-sized, the adjacent Children’s Area offers its own generous, well-lit space with reading nooks, an activity deck, a storytelling amphitheater and computer stations. Elsewhere, outdoor reading terraces and a Zen pocket garden beckon you to sit, read, reflect.
Everywhere you look, people are engaged in quiet pursuits yet the atmosphere is peaceful, soothing. Welcome to the Lafayette Library and Learning Center, a place of lifelong learning where patrons of all ages and all backgrounds come together in what is now endearingly called "our community’s living room."
