“An extraordinary outcome of Lafayette’s new Library is the way in which it helps build a stronger, more engaged and enlightened community.  Creating events and experiences that enrich and inspire all people is a fundamental part of the Lafayette Library and Learning Center Foundation mission.”  Karen Mulvaney, Foundation Board Member

“Working on this event was a truly inspiring experience due to the generosity of community, friends and supporters.  Whether calling for donations for the raffle or help in hauling river rocks for centerpieces, those I knew, as well as volunteers I had just met, all came together to make a big job a more manageable one!  I have gained new life long friendships and LLLCF has gained new supporters and friends as well”  Tamra Moon Johnson, East Meets West Co-Chair

EAST MEETS WEST EVENT, by Suzanne Everly, East Meets West Co-Chair

The 2nd annual East Meets West Fashion Show and Luncheon took place on a sunny, spring afternoon on May 5th at the Veterans Memorial Building in Lafayette. Volunteers who support the library and help bring cultural and educational opportunities to the Lamorinda community organized the event in conjunction with the Library Foundation.

Niroop Srivatsa, Lafayette’s Planning and Building Manager, swathed in a striking sari, welcomed guests with a bindi and a sandalwood greeting, setting the tone for a “journey along the Silk Road.” As guests entered the hall, they were treated to colorful, multi-cultural displays of antique Asian costumes from the Ken and Dink Dorking collection. Several of these garments are headed to the Asian Art Museum.

Veterans Memorial Building was transformed into a festive space, filled with vivid pink and orange table cloths, glittering bangles and exotic orchid centerpieces. Guests mingled and shopped among the trunk shows before lunch. The trunk show participants, whose backgrounds were from “Silk Road” countries –China, Thailand, Nepal, India and Turkey -- provided a thematic guide for “the journey.”  Accessory trunk show participants, Soo-Ling Chan, Maria Lench, Suay Silk and Dechen Designs generously donated 15% of their proceeds to the library foundation, as did the three clothing designers.

After opening comments from Event Co-Chairs Suzanne Everly and Tamra Moon Johnson, the featured Mistress of Ceremonies, Kristina Owyoung stepped up to the podium. Kristina, the 2010 Miss Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Lafayette native, graced the guests with her presence in a gorgeous, violet formal Chinese silk dress. Later, Kristina changed to a beautiful, green, hand-beaded gown from SWATI Couture.

Fifteen women from the community modeled outfits from three clothing designers.  Saffron Rare Threads featured structured silhouettes with feminine lines and timeless appeal. Next was Nisan Design, with an eclectic collection of trendy fashions. Closing the show was dramatic SWATI Couture, with Indian-inspired, formal occasion wear.

Throughout the day’s events, raffle prize winners were announced, increasing the library foundation’s fundraising efforts. Over $20,000 was raised for the Lafayette Library and Learning Center Foundation. All proceeds benefit the Library Foundation and will be used to continue supporting increased hours, library materials and Consortium programs.

The fashion show event was just one part of the library foundation’s 2010 East Meets West Cultural Program. On May 8th, the library was the site of an afternoon filled with cultural activities including dance programs, art projects, games and ethnic displays.
